It’s Never Too Late! Part 3

In a previous post I wrote about the opposite extreme of the idea that it is never too late to change and outlined that people shouldn’t put off change, especially a change toward an improved relationship with God, as they are missing out on further increase, improvement, growth and development.  Now I want to write about why a person might choose to wait.

The idea behind delaying a life change towards an increased relationship with God is usually motivated by a sense of loss.  One reason we might put off a commitment with God is that we may not want to give up what we have now or what we are doing now.  Sure, we want to go to heaven when we die, but we also want to keep doing what we are doing right now.  We don’t want to lose something we have or something that we think we will not be allowed to do once we commit to God.

This is just plain wrong thinking because in reality there is no loss when we commit to a relationship with God.  We never lose when we enter into a relationship with God, in fact the opposite is true, we gain liberty.  Jesus states the reason He has come to us in Luke 4:18:

The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free…

The shocking truth is that once we have the Spirit of Christ we have liberty; we have freedom; we are free.  In fact we have freedom to do whatever we want.  We do not have to be afraid of losing something by accepting Christ.  Now hold on to your hats because this might sound weird.  Once we are set free we can do anything that we want to do.  We can smoke and drink all we want.  We can tear up and fight all we want.  We can do anything that we want to.  We have liberty!

To some that statement sounds ridiculous but guess what, once we are truly set free, we won’t want that junk any more.  See, because the desire for those things is what has held us in bondage.  Once we are set free, we can do them, but we won’t want to.  The Bible says that once we step into a relationship with Jesus, we are joined with the Spirit of Christ and we become a “new creation.”

Of course there are counter-examples of people who do indeed have a relationship with God and yet still slip and fall in the mud.  Such examples seem to make the above statements appear naïve at best but read on to part 4 on a future post and you will see exactly why I maintain that there is a disconnect between these so-called sinful actions and a relationship with God.
