updating the blogs

I used wordpress as my blog platform for a few years, then switched over to using goodreads for writing based stuff and facebook for family and friends based stuff. So for quite a few years, my wordpress site sat here untended. The weeds were getting high so I just migrated over a bunch of relevant posts from GR to here.

The whole reason for this is I am planning to bring back my author website in the next few weeks. (It is being built while I type this) and my expectation is that I would use wordpress to serve blog content over to my website. Fingers are crossed that all of that works seamlessly.

I am pretty excited about the website as it is going to have “responsive” technology. That is, the site is supposed to know what type of device is viewing it and adjust its size accordingly. Then, the site look different on a phone or tablet or computer and hopefully you won’t have to scroll around. Fingers crossed on that one too.

A busy month

October 28, 2014

A little embarrassing fact is creatives are terrible at time management. (I’ve had my struggles and I’m trying to improve.) This month I decided to not focus on anything except reading and writing –Well, it was supposed to be all reading but I can’t help myself!

This month I polished off seven books. Two were nonfiction guides for writers. The others were (ugh!) romance books.
Purely pedagogical, of course.

Why romance? One of the weaknesses in my writing is that I’ve never quite figured out how to do romance (which is weird, right? Because I’m a very candle-light-and-roses kind of guy). So I bit the bullet and am surprised to say that I quite enjoyed a few. I haven’t posted reviews on GR yet, but I will soon. Who woulda thunk it?

As to the writing, I’m a good 300 pages into the second part of the Under the Shadow of Darkness series and I’m hoping (fingers crossed! fingers crossed!) that my romantic scenes are up to snuff.

Here is a screen shot of my status. Those cute little flags are completed chapters!TDG-Capture-2014-11

Santa Claus vs. The Aliens — new cover done

October 7, 2014

SVA2-20141012a_flat_front-200x300I’ve had quite a few reviewers who’ve loved my book Santa Claus vs. The Aliens (thank you!) and hated the cover. So I’ve decided to commission a new cover by an artist I found on dev art.
I should have the new cover on the book in about a week. Until then here it is.
Please let me know what you think!

First draft done–Gabriella and the Curse of the Black Spot

August 27, 2014Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00071]

I finally completed my first draft of Gabriella and the Curse of the Black Spot, Book 2 of the NuGen series so now I can take a breather and get back to some reading.

I typically don’t read when I am writing as I find it distracting. When I am writing, I am constantly thinking about my characters and how they will deal with certain situations. I guess I don’t have enough brain cells to read other books at the same time.

After a first draft, I like to let the book sit and cool for about 2-3 weeks so I plan to buzz through several books that I have been meaning to get to.

After that I will give the book another pass then send it out as ARC. Hopefully it will be published in a few months.

When writing feels like work

August 19, 2014

I oh so love writing. I love the creative process; I love spinning the ideas around in my head then putting them down in print. I absolutely love the aha moment when an idea pops into my head, as I’m writing, that feels spontaneous and organic, almost as if one of my characters is somehow communicating to me metaphysically, telling me what he or she wants to do next. I love it.

But then there most necessarily comes the pages and pages of filler detail that needs to be fleshed out in order to keep the flow and logic of the novel moving. I try to make it fun, really I do, trying to fill it with character thoughts, contemplations and motivations but I can’t help day dreaming about my next book while I tap out the words.

That’s where I’ve been finding myself more and more often recently. Just finishing off chapter 30 of Gabriella and the Curse of the Black Spot, the second book in the NuGen series.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s been an adventure but I can’t wait for it to be done. About four or five more chapters to go.
